Muinaissuomalaiset ovat kunnioittaneet ja pelänneet karhua niin paljon, että sen todellista nimeä ei ole saanut lausua ääneen. Karhu on yksi keskeisimpiä suomalaisessa mytologiassa esiintyviä eläimiä. Kansainvälisen tarinan mukaan se on laskettu maan päälle Otavan (Ison karhun) tähtikuviosta.
