Tarvas sijaitsee Luontokeskus Haltian 'Alisessa maailmassa'. Tarvas-sanan merkitys on nykyisin hämärtynyt, mutta sillä on alunperin ilmeisesti tarkoitettu sarvekasta eläintä (hirvi, kauris, härkä). Useissa kansanrunoissa tarvas esiintyy hirvieläimen kertosanana. Hirvi on hyvin tyypillinen aihe myös vanhoissa kalliomaalauksissa ja sillä on varmasti ollut muinaissuomalaisille myös myyttistä merkitystä. Runossa ”Hiiden hirven hiihdäntä” hirvi esiintyy reaalimaailman ulkopuolisena, myyttisenä olentona.
